The Step Pyramid at Saqqara, Egypt is dated even older than pyramids at Giza and Dashur. It was here that the genius architect Imhotep built the first monuments in stones in 27th century BC. While there, we were keenly aware that we were on foreign soil and we were also back in time. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. .
Magnificent… I’ve always loved to read about the ancient Egyptian pyramids… some how my mathematical brain wants to try and solve their mysteries…
It is a fascinating subject. Some people even think that pyramids were built by people from outer space!
A sight like this reminds me how temporary we are, and how lasting our actions can be. Nicely captured Michael.
Well said, Ed!
Great choice and wonderful image – it definitely feels foreign to me!
Thank you The Retiring Sort!
It’s massive .. never heard about this … great shot again. Amazing construction.
Hi Viveka, thank you for the comment! Michael
Thanks for another memory Michael. When we were there the nearby tomb complex was crowded with tourists and it was nice to be able to walk on the less crowded path to view the step pyramid. Cheers, Chris
It really was an amazing sight.Glad you did all these trips!
Wonderful foreign image, Michael. Egypt also felt very foreign to me. 🙂

Hi Rene, Cappadocia with its strange rock formation and cave dwelling is a wonderful destination that must not be missed! regards, Michael
I always love watching any documentry discussing ancient Egypt. Apparently they murdered and buried the slaves who built these because they would know the secrets of the passageways. Did you hear that to be a fact? I can’t imagine standing there where someone placed a stone 27 BC. I sincerely wonder if it’s always been that arid, seems so uninhabitable.
I haven’t heard that. Some people question the purpose of the pryamids, as contrary to common believe, bodies of kings are not usually found in them. Some believe pyramids are passages to heaven! Maybe thousands of years ago, the areas around the Nile were quite fertile.
First time I’ve seen this. And very different from what I’ve seen in past pyramid pictures. Thank you for sharing.
I understand they were trying out ot build pyramids with smaller stones before they proceeded to build the bigger ones with bigger stones at Giza. It looks like that there is quite a step in technology before they could build the bigger ones.
