Travel Theme: Glow (Fireflies)

This week’s Travel Theme is Glow.

Hope this photo makes some sense to you.

This is a photo taken of fireflies in the rain clinging onto leaves of a tree outside my window.CIMG3888

The following is a description of fireflies in the Wikipedia:

Lampyridae is a family of insects  in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of  bioluminescene to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a “cold light”, with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale red, with wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers.

Zooming out, you can see more of the tree – it is almost like a Christmas tree with fireflies clinging onto.DSCF6098

Under rain, understand  fireflies wouldn’t fly but cling on to trees. But why do they hang on to this tree?

I was not able to  improve on the picture as the tree swayed in the rain, increasing the exposure would not improve the contrast between the fireflies and the surrounding!

  1. They are truly amazing little creatures … You did as well as was possible under the circumstances, I am sure, Michael !

  2. Ah, fireflies, or as I called them as a child, lightning bugs! They conjure up such happy childhood memories! I used to chase them and capture them in a glass jar to watch them “glow”. Of course, after a few minutes, my Mom would have me release them and I’d start the process again! 🙂

    • Hi Linda, I used to keep a lot of pets including insects when I was a child – butterflies, silk worms, crickets, spiders etc. It is good that this reminds you of childhood memories!

  3. I remember when I was so young, I would ask my Father to catch a firefly for me. One night, he caught one and placed it under an inverted clear glass. The next day, it has lost its light and it made feel so sad and even more curious. I love fireflies, they are magic to me.

Thanks for allowing me to feel that beauty by writing about them. 🙂

    • I have never caught a firefly. There is a historical well know scholar in China. It is believed that he caught many fireflies so that he can continue studying during the night!

  4. I love the shot, Michael. Fireflies make everything look so magical. I once went horseback riding in a pitch black forest lit only by fireflies. Beautiful.
