We saw it elsewhere and it was the thickest moss I’ve ever seen. They do get lots of rain.
I understand moss only thrive under very clean environment – clean air, lots of oxgen – no doubt, Milford is very clean.
I also think it is moss — I’ve seen it thick like this in rainforest conditions on our own (Canadian) west coast, most spectacularly up in Haida Gwaii (formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands.) A splendid, haunting photo; it does the moss & forest justice.
